In the Studio: Say 'I Do' to Bespoke Hand Painted Wedding Stationery

Since getting engaged a few months ago, I've finally started to fully immerse myself in all things wedding-related! As an artist and print designer, I've been particularly interested in the idea of incorporating my artwork and illustrations into our big day in some way.

Whilst furiously scouring Pinterest for inspiration on every detail, from dresses to floral arrangements, I found so many beautiful examples of hand painted wedding stationery. I fell in love with the idea of designing bespoke invitations featuring elements personal to me and my fiancé Ben's relationship. This project will undoubtedly evolve as our wedding plans progress but I wanted to share some of the initial work I've created so far.

As a print designer I've always been drawn to florals – a constant recurring theme in a lot of my work and one that has also followed me throughout my life. Fortunately Ben is a keen gardener who also has a strong appreciation for flowers and plants - I’m very lucky I know! Our shared love for nature has played a significant role in our relationship over the years, ever since our first date to Kew Gardens back in 2015 - so obviously this was an ideal starting point.

To begin, I drew inspiration from botanical gardens and English country estates, creating elements that would beautifully compliment various wedding venues and themes. Working with gouache, I painted a delicate wisteria tree - a personal favourite of mine and the first thing we planted in our garden - though it hasn't bloomed just yet unfortunately!

I also painted an ornate trellis covered in sprawling flowers, drawing inspiration from the charm of traditional garden rooms and the captivating beauty of chinoiserie paintings - a style I've always loved. After creating these illustrations I decided to turn them into two separate invitations, both with their own unique botanical identity. I enjoyed the process of these so much that before I knew it I’d created an entire wedding stationery suite for both themes! I used the paintings in a few different ways across the collection, creating some delicate borders and also a pretty repeat pattern.

As I know our own wedding plans will evolve before we tie the knot and I’m already inspired to work on some more invitation ideas - I’ve decided to open a little Etsy shop! I was so happy with how these designs turned out I couldn’t resist sharing them and I love the idea of other couples choosing to incorporate my artwork as part of their special day.

My products will all be customisable templates, giving you a stress free way to have beautiful hand painted invitations - without the hefty price tag! I’ve already listed both of my initial designs and I’m planning to continue this project and hopefully create lots more along different themes. This is a new creative outlet for me alongside my day to day as a print designer and I’m excited to keep working on new ideas!

In addition to the customisable templates on Etsy I will also be offering a bespoke wedding stationery design service through my website - for couples who really want to add that personal touch. This will allow me to work closely with couples to create bespoke one of a kind invitations and stationery suites specifically tailored to their unique love story! Whether it’s a special location or a particular shared interest you’d like to include, I’d love to help bring your vision to life.

So whether couples opt for the convenience of my Etsy designs or choose the personalised journey of a bespoke commission, it's a privilege to share my love for art and design with those also preparing for their special day. I always tell Ben how much I love ‘love’ so combining my passion for painting with anything wedding related feels like a perfect match to me!

I can’t wait to share more very soon.
